Background of the Study
Humor in the Igbo language is a complex interplay of linguistic creativity and cultural nuance, with pragmatic inference playing a central role in decoding jokes and humorous narratives. In Enugu, Igbo humor often relies on indirect language, double meanings, and subtle cues that require listeners to infer the intended message beyond the literal words (Nwankwo, 2023). Pragmatic inference enables speakers to interpret implicit meanings and appreciate the layered humor that characterizes Igbo comedic expressions. Traditional jokes, proverbs, and playful banter depend on shared cultural knowledge, allowing audiences to fill in gaps and connect disparate ideas to reveal irony or satire. However, the evolving communication styles influenced by globalization and digital media may alter the mechanisms of pragmatic inference, affecting how humor is produced and received (Okafor, 2024). This study investigates the role of pragmatic inference in Igbo language humor, analyzing its contribution to the effectiveness of comedic expressions and its evolution in contemporary contexts. By examining recorded humor sessions and conducting interviews with comedians and audiences, the research aims to shed light on the cognitive and cultural processes that underpin Igbo humor.
Statement of the Problem
The reliance on pragmatic inference in Igbo humor poses challenges as modern influences potentially dilute shared cultural cues essential for humor comprehension (Nwankwo, 2023). Changes in communication practices, particularly among younger generations influenced by digital media, may lead to misinterpretation or loss of nuanced meaning in jokes and humorous exchanges (Okafor, 2024). This shift threatens the traditional effectiveness of Igbo humor, as the implicit messages may not be readily inferred by diverse audiences. The study seeks to address the gap in understanding how pragmatic inference operates in contemporary Igbo humor and to propose strategies to sustain its cultural resonance.
Objectives of the Study
To explore the role of pragmatic inference in Igbo humor.
To analyze how modern influences affect humor comprehension.
To recommend methods for preserving effective humor practices.
Research Questions
How is pragmatic inference employed in Igbo humorous expressions?
What challenges do modern influences pose to humor comprehension?
What strategies can support effective pragmatic inference in humor?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the cognitive and cultural mechanisms underlying Igbo humor in Enugu. By understanding the role of pragmatic inference, the research will benefit comedians, cultural scholars, and educators aiming to preserve traditional humor in the face of modern communication shifts. The findings will contribute to strategies that ensure humor remains culturally resonant and effectively communicated (Nwankwo, 2023; Okafor, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
